'In the late 18th century, the British deported the Acadians (French colonists in Acadia) from eastern Canada after defeating France in the Seven Years' War and taking over their territories in North America east of the Mississippi River. Some Acadian refugees were resettled in Louisiana along the Mississippi River; their descendants became known as Cajuns.[11] They also put pressure on the Chitimacha population because they took over their land.

Eventually some Chitimacha (of which the Grand Caillou/Dulac Tribe are  members of) married Acadians and gradually became acculturated to their community, including converting to Catholicism.[11] Others absorbed Europeans into Chitimacha society. Mixed-race children born to Chitimacha women were considered to belong to their mother's families and generally were raised within the Indigenous culture.'

'Knight and Lomas speculate that the Knights Templar discovered under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem a royal archive dating from King Solomon's times that stated that Phoenicians from Tyre voyaged to a westerly continent following a star called "La Merika" named after the Nasoraean Mandaean morning star.[27]: 76–77  According to Knight and Lomas, the Templars learned that to sail to that continent, they had to follow a star by the same name. Sinclair supposedly followed this route.[28]'

'As we know, the Acadians settled on the shores of rivers which emptied into the Bay of Fundy, or Baie Française as it was called during this period. The Bay of Fundy, because of its funnel-like shape, has very high tides, which also affect all the rivers connecting to it. At high tide, these rivers would overflow their banks at various points, covering a considerable area of lowlands, or marshes. When the tide went out, these lands were still wet with leftover salt tidewater, a spongy, marshy terrain which was built up from layers of fine rich soil due to the twice-a-day ebb and flow of tidal action over many centuries.

'To make use of these rich lands the Acadians built dykes, or long  walls around the perimeter of the lands affected in this manner. The dykes were so well compacted and tight, that they stopped the river water from flooding these lands as the tide was rising. The Acadians then hand-dug canals or ditches on this land, each draining towards an aboiteau, a one-way door or gate, which lead back out to the river. In this way, the rain and snow would wash the salt off the land, into these canals and back out to sea through the aboiteau. The drainage would occur only at low tide, when there was no salt water on the sea side of the gate, and the salt river water could not come back in when the tide was raising, because the doors only opened one way. As the tide came in, the salt water would put pressure on the one-way gate, causing it to close and pressing the seal even tighter as the tide came up, putting more pressure on the gate. After two years of this land drainage process, the salty soil on the marshes became de-salted and dry, and these marshes thus made excellent rich soil for farming.'

THE GOVERNING BODY

'The governing body of the Grand Caillou/Dulac Band is the Tribal Chief, Tribal Council and the Council of Elders.  The Tribal Council is comprised of seven council members and the Council of Elders is comprised of four senior members.'

TRIBAL CHIEF:

'Shirell Parfait-Dardar'

'The tribes' plight offers an extreme example of a lesser-known but fast-growing impact in the climate crisis: saltwater intrusion.

The landward movement of seawater threatens drinking water supplies, coastal farming and coastal ecosystems. Rising seasv, more frequent storms, higher tides, drought and the pressure of pumping for drinking water are combining to accelerate the salt invasion.'

'"That strips us of not only being able to generate an income to provide for ourselves, it also strips us of our ability to feed ourselves healthy," Shirell Parfait-Dardar, chief of the Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw, said in an interview.'
