There is a growing problem nationally and internationally.
Because of all of the wars throughout the world nations have stockpiled billions of tons of ordnance.
It is very dangerous to store explosives and rocket fuel, and they are most often stored underground.
I found out something terrifying about Loring Air force Base which is above Van Buren here in Maine that needs to be addressed, but I am not sure who to tell.
There are Air Force and military bases spread throughout America, and each nation in the world.
We came upon this problem researching a possible perchlorate caused cancer cluster at our high school that is located at a former World War 2 era air field which in recent years was also the site of our town's fireworks displays.
As we researched perchlorate we discovered most ground water perchlorate contamination comes from military bases and defence sites where ordnance is stored or disposed of, and industrial sites where it is manufactured.

California lowered it's maximum allowed level of perchlorate in drinking water to 1 microgram / liter or 1 part per billion in 2015:

Since the state of Massachusetts would have to pay for remediation, cleanup and perhaps a class action suit, should it's department have been in charge of the Mount Greylock Regional High School cancer cluster investigation ?

As a member of the closed group I can verify that there were way more Mt Greylock alumni commenting about their thyroid problems than any of the local newspapers claimed, or the State Bureau of Environmental Health mentioned in it's report.
Mt Greylock Regional School is ranked 45th in Massachusetts out of 641 high schools and ranked #1048 out of 17,840 high schools nationally with an overall score of 94.13/100 in 2023 by U S News and World Report
In 2004 extremely high levels of perchlorate were discovered by mandated regular testing in the south well of our Mt Greylock Regional High School.
Perchlorates have been associated with thyroid cancer and hypo thyroid conditions which are associated with psychological disorders.
Most perchlorate contamination of well water occurs from military storage of explosives and rocket fuel.

Perchlorate might or might not cause thyroid problems, but it's presence in elevated levels is an indicator of something wrong that could cause further problems with all of the drinking water in the aquifer passing below the high school for not only the new school, but present and future developments in the area as well, or in this case, as unwell (pardon the pun).
Until the cause of the unnatural elevated perchlorate levels are identified, the kids and community are still at risk.

The study considered cancer incidences from 1982 - 2008 while Mt Greylock RHS opened in 1961 which means the ages of the first year of the study, 1982, that consisted of Mt Greylock students, would have only been about 39 years old at the top age...
...Who would have been 26 years older, or 65 years old in 2008, while being even younger for the following classes...
...Whereas the data set of the average state cancer rate would have had a top age perhaps in the 80 -90 year old range, where cancer is much more common place.
Also, the data set for the average thyroid cancer rates for the rest of the state would not only be skewed by the much higher age groups there, but would also be skewed by other super elevated perchlorate contamination thyroid cancer clusters in defense industry and military sites.
A baseline for no perchlorate contamination must be established to determine thyroid cancer rates due to perchlorate contamination accurately.

What causes perchlorate contamination ?
